IPC Launches AI Tool to Protect Journalists in Osun Election

The International Press Centre (IPC) launched WaFlo, a WhatsApp-based AI platform to report attacks on journalists during the Osun State governorship election.

Executive Director Lanre Arogundade announced the pilot tool in Osogbo. It allows real-time tracking, verification, and logging of threats against media workers.

AI Monitoring and Response

WaFlo ensures safety threats do not go unnoticed, helping media organizations respond quickly.

  1. Pilot Testing: Used during the Osun election before a full rollout in 2027.
  2. Main Functions: Real-time reporting of harassment, threats, and physical attacks.
  3. How to Use: Journalists send "safemedia" via text or WhatsApp to report incidents.

Supported by the EU-SDGN II program, the IPC urged security forces and political groups to respect accredited reporters.
