Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) launched the National Innovation Hub Standards Framework to help startup incubators grow across the entire country. Instead of strict rules, the framework gives local hubs a clear guide to improve their operations using 35 key benchmarks.
Out of Nigeria’s 339+ innovation hubs, most are located in Lagos and Abuja. By setting clear standards, NITDA helps hubs in regions like Uyo, Calabar, and Jigawa support local entrepreneurs so they don't have to move to big cities.
Main Priorities
- Expanding Digital Infrastructure: The government is pairing these hub standards with major network upgrades, deploying 90,000 kilometers of fibre-optic cables and 3,700 new telecom towers.
- Connecting Schools to Industry: NITDA is working with the Ministry of Education to teach digital skills in schools, ensuring startups have access to trained local talent.
- Upgrading Local Hubs: The goal is to provide regional hubs with better funding and mentorship so they can offer the same quality of support as top-tier tech centers.
