Behind every concert, conference and festival there’s a crew that most of the audience never sees. Mobile Screens and Sound Limited (MSS), working with KolaDaisi University, has graduated over 60 students from the first MSS Event Tech Academy. The aim: build more skilled event technology professionals for Nigeria’s fast-growing events and entertainment scene.
Ten weeks, six departments
Students spent 10 intensive weeks in one of six specialized tracks:
- LED screen engineering
- sound engineering
- camera craft and video production
- light design and control
- event management and production
- rigging and trussing
At the graduation ceremony, held at Darlington Hall in Lagos on Tuesday, September 29, the graduates didn’t collect certificates. They ran the event’s technical and production side themselves, handling LED screens, sound, lighting, cameras and event management. For anyone building event tech skills, a live production is hard to beat as a classroom, rather like learning to swim in the pool instead of reading about it.
A direct path to work
The five best students will receive job opportunities at MSS, which gives them a straight line into the industry. If you track software development jobs and related technical roles, this is a good reminder that tech careers also exist on the production floor.
Voices from the ceremony
MSS Managing Director Tunbosun Kola-Daisi urged graduates to treat the day as the start of lifelong learning, since the industry keeps evolving and so must their knowledge and creativity. KolaDaisi University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olajumoke Morenikeji, said universities must stay connected to the real world and prepare students not only to seek jobs but to create value and opportunities. Certificates were presented jointly by Kola-Daisi, Prof. Morenikeji and Olasunmbo Obaseki of the university’s alumni relations directorate.
Twenty years of experience, passed on
The academy arrives as MSS prepares to mark its 20th anniversary in October. Two decades of work in Nigeria’s event technology scene have given the company expertise across the technical and creative skills that big events need. The academy turns that experience into a structured program and a talent pipeline for the industry’s future. It’s also worth following technology events where such skills are put to work, since they show how much technology sits behind a single show.
